SEVERE STORM IN ENGLAND.; GREAT DAMAGE REPORTED -- VISCOUNT CANTELUPE DROWNED.

'Why is Delaware called that?,' people ask all the time. The name derives, ultimately, from that of Earl De La Warr, once Governor of the Jamestown Colony, via Delaware Bay.

One of the other titles held by Earl De La Warr is Viscount Cantelupe. I thought someone might be having a little fun at Wikipedia's expense when I read this, but apparently not. The De La Warr heir gets called Cantelupe. A related New York Times headline gives the title for this blog post. There is a Cantelupe Golf Club, which is an artisans' golf club (I imagine this means it was originally a project to better the working man via golf) based at the lovely Royal Ashdown course, which I have played very badly once.
